Sniff Games with Milo

Writer's picture: Del Mar Dog LifeDel Mar Dog Life

Milo is very gentle but is a compulsive chewer. He will knock everything off the counter then chew up the paper towels. He will also find and eat any strange items hidden in bushes. Because of his chewing Milo has to wear a muzzle any time he is out.

I started introducing him to odors such as Birch to help him focus on the walks. It only took a few times before he recognized that the sniff can means rewards and maybe a chance to take off the muzzle for a moment. Some dogs are hesitant to smell a strong odor but Milo is responsive to the Birch scent and has no problem touching his nose to the can.

In the last few weeks we have been introducing and playing scent games to all our guests such as touch it, shell game and find it. We begin with touch it- just trying to keep Milo’s nose stuck to the can for a moment so that he will remember the scent. Later I will add decoy cans for a shell game then eventually hide cans along our walk for a reward.

Adding sniff games to our walks has been successful for distracting while passing other dogs and mentally enriching. You can send your dog to learn sniff games by scheduling a visit on our website. Contact us today for a meet and greet to discuss your pet sitting or dog walking needs in Del Mar, Solana Beach, Rancho Santa Fe and Carmel Valley.
