Ring the Bell is a fun game to help let you know when your dog needs a potty break. It is especially helpful if you live in an apartment and your dog doesn’t have access to a yard. Use a bell hung from a door to allow dog to ask to be taken on a walk. Make a habit to ring the hanging bell each time you walk your dog.
Tie a bell to a rope and hang it on the wall near a hallway door.
Place the treat next to the bell and use a high value treat to lure your dog’s nose to the bell.
Say “Ring the bell” while luring with the treat.
When her nose touches the bell, open the hallway door and give her a treat.
Repeat the game until she is able to touch the bell without luring with a treat.
Keep practicing this game right before leaving the house with your dog until it is routine for your dog to touch the bell with her nose or paw. After your dog successfully learns the “Ring the Bell” game, move the bell to the front door and play the game right before you leave on a walk.
