Active games with your dog provide exercise and relieve stress while promoting basic obedience in a fun way. We regularly practice these games on our walks through the trails and parks of San Diego, but you can also play these games in your home. These active games include:

  • fetch with a ball or frisbee which are important for recall and returning on command. Use a 15-30ft long line when playing fetch If your dog does not want to return with the ball and reward with treats.

  • Tug with tether tug toy or stuffed animals is a great game for high energy dogs and teaches cooperation and dropping items on command.

  • Ring the Bell is a fun game to help let you know when your dog needs a potty break. It is especially helpful if you live in an apartment and your dog doesn’t have access to a yard. Use a bell hung from a door to allow dog to ask to be taken on a walk. Make a habit to ring the hanging bell each time you walk your dog.

Keep practicing these games right before leaving the house with your dog until it is routine for your dog to touch the bell with her nose or paw. After your dog successfully learns a new game, then play the game right before you leave on a walk.

Active games on walks include

  • puppy push ups (luring your dog to sit and down positions for treats)

  • go to center (rewarding your dog for sitting between your legs)

  • scattering kibble on the ground to distract your dog on walks.

  • Walk in a figure 8 pattern a few times at the beginning of each outdoor dog walk to keep your dog at your side and relieve zoomies.
